Georgia Alemis is a 1994 graduate of DePaul University School of Music. During her study at DePaul University, she studied private viola with Rami Solomonow, former principle violist of the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Ms. Alemis earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree with a major in viola performance. She furthered her education by earning Master of Arts in Education from Concordia University in 1999. As a performing violist, Ms. Alemis has performed in the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and served as principal violist of the Elmhurst Symphony for many years. In addition, Ms. Alemis has worked with Chicago Symphony Orchestra conductor, Maestro Danial Barenboim, Chicago Symphony Choir Conductor Ms. Margaret Hillis, Associate Conductor of the Chicago Symphony Maestro Michael Morgon, Dr. Cliff Colnot, Dr. Stephen Altopp, Mr. Alan Heatherington, Mr. Paul Solak, Mr. Meng-Kong Tham, Mr. Larry Pecorella and many others. Ms. Alemis is also a studio recording musician and performed on commercials with Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Lyric Opera of Chicago members. Ms. Alemis has been the Director of Orchestras in District 41 in Glen Ellyn since the fall of 1994. She has conducted the Hadley String Orchestra to First Division Ratings at the Illinois Grade School Music Association District and State levels for twenty-one consecutive years. In April of 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014, and in 2015 the Hadley String Orchestra received the “Honor Status” for their exceptional performance in the Illinois Grade School Music Association State Organization Contest. No other junior high orchestra in the state of Illinois has achieved this honor year after year. In 2016, Ms. Alemis was honored by receiving The Cloyd Myers Memorial Award for Excellence in Music Education awarded by the Illinois Grade School Music Association.In 2002, Ms. Alemis received the Glen Ellyn School District 41 nomination for The Illinois State Board of Education Those Who Excel Award. At the state level for Those Who Excel, she received a Certificate of Appreciation. This award is given annually to an educator who has demonstrated teaching excellence and has performed beyond what is expected. As the Director of Orchestras in School District #41, she has facilitated many changes to improve music opportunities for all students. As the director, she oversees curriculum and scheduling of 250 to 300 students. These students enroll in fifth grade and progress through the middle school performing in three levels of orchestras district wide. Flexibility is key to the successful program that Ms. Alemis has continued to build in the elementary and middle school. As the schools change their daily building schedules, Ms. Alemis has worked with administrators and teams of teachers to assure the quality and fidelity of the orchestra program remains intact. With a student first approach, she has been able to build strong relationships with parents. This allows for support at home for the students practice schedules and learning. The school district believes in the integration of the orchestra program; it is not a stand-alone program. The value has been built by Ms. Alemis’ ability to communicate the value of a strong program. Ms. Alemis is recognized as a director and educator that welcomes feedback to improve her orchestra sound quality. Judges will often wonder how Ms. Alemis has challenged her students and how she helps them achieve such a high standard of sound quality. Her work provides mentoring opportunities to those working alongside of her in teaching music. It also allows for professional teaming, which she schedules, to give more students the opportunity to grow musically. Ms. Alemis has been an adjudicator for the Illinois Grade School Music Association State Organization Festival & Solo and Ensemble Festival. She has been a clinician and chamber coach at the junior high and high school level in the Chicago Metropolitan area. She welcomes opportunities to collaborate with fellow musicians and seeks opportunities to do so. Ms. Alemis is a member of the American String Teachers Association. & NAMM Foundation. She believes in professional development and continues to participate in coursework and conferences.
Ms. Georgia Alemis 2016 Cloyd Myers Memorial Award Recipient for Excellence in Music Education Ms. Georgia Alemis, Hadley Orchestra Director, was awarded the prestigious Cloyd Myers Memorial Award for Excellence in Music Education from the Illinois Grade School Music Association (IGSMA) on Monday, September 26, 2016 at the state IGSMA meeting. Ms. Alemis was nominated and chosen from the many music educators, adjudicators, and state board members from across the state of Illinois. She has conducted the Hadley String Orchestra to First Division Ratings at the IGSMA District and State levels for twenty-two consecutive years. In April of 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016, the Hadley String Orchestra received "Honor Status" for their exceptional performance in the Illinois Grade School Music Association State Organization Contest. No other junior high orchestra in the state of Illinois has achieved this honor. "I am so deeply honored and humbled to receive this award," Ms. Alemis expressed at the state meeting on September 26, 2016.
